Pre or post ride drink
Protein is the bodies healing food, that ache you get the next few days after a heavy workout? that's your muscles repairing after being tore and ripped. When a muscle microtears it heals itself and will get stronger. How long this takes will depend on your diet, your training schedule and often how used to the excercise your body is.
When I started commuting to work by 26 miles a day it got to Wednesday and I could barely walk. I Felt stiff in my quads and calves and they felt tender to the touch. This was because I wasn't eating enough protein to recover from the heavy load I was placing on them.
The local B&M bargain shop had just got some of the sky smoothie drinks in, they are normally £2.50rrp however they had them in at a bargain 49p, I went in an bought 30! this would last me nearly 2 months.
They tasted ok and offered around 25g of protein which was quite dense given the size of the bottle, their downside was they were a bit too sweet for my taste and they wouldn't be 49p for ever! This led me to look into developing my own drink.
I'd been into weight training in my youth and we always got home and ate chicken, cheese, natural yogurt and drank whey protein drinks, this made me think into ways of combining ingredients to not also add protein but to also replenish some of the lost carbs and fats from exercise.
Oats are a great source of carbs but unless youre a horse with a nose bag, eating oats is not really a pleasant thought and the only way I was aware of was to turn them into porridge with Milk. Its a bit hard to drink porridge though and if Scottish you probably only eat it with salt anyways!
Protein powder is obviously a great source but on its own it doesn't normally have a nice flavour or if it does its not cheap. £30+ per tub which might last a month used daily.
Now im starting to get ideas, what about a milk/protein powder/oats hybrid drink this would offer all the nutrients I need and be easy to make and drink fresh.
Into a blender I added the milk first, if you add the oats then milk the oats tend to get stuck into the blades and not mix properly, then add the protein powder of your choice ( the site link at the top of the page has some great protein powders), honey for sweetening and natural yoghurt to thicken the drink up and add more protein and natural nutrients.
Once made it can be stored in the fridge so when you get back from your ride you can drink it straight away. I've also had it as a pre ride drink before thanks to all the cabs in it.
