Car and van insurance
Vehicle insurance, it's something we don't really want to have to pay for but legally we need. Plus who pays for repairs/theft should the worse happen?
I'm sure you all remember your first car, the excitement of passing your test and either saving up all your spare money to buy your own car like I did or were lucky and had a car bought for you as a present. Now you've got the car, you're going to need insurance, but where to start?
When I started driving back in 18+ years ago the internet was just a thought and price comparison sites where probably just a thought in someones imagination, if you wanted a quote you got the yellow pages out (that was like Google on paper for the younger readers!) and rang all the insurance companies writing their best prices and a reference number down on a piece of paper!
Jump forwards nearly 20 years and with the help of the internet getting an insurance quote is very straight forward and quick and can be saved to purchase later , normally valid for 30 days.
There are 2 companies I use for quotations, Gocompare who I got my Campervan Insurance from and Confused.com who I got my car insurance from. The meerkats were more expensive! Try them both as one may work better than the other depending on your circumstances.

What do you need for you to be able to do a quote?
Getting a quote is simple and should take no more than 10 minutes if you have all the required information, if you do not divulge all the correct information your insurance will be null and void and you will not be covered if anything was to happen to you or your car.
Before starting a qoute, make sure you have the following (especially if you are doing a quote for someone else!)
Before starting a qoute, make sure you have the following (especially if you are doing a quote for someone else!)
- Your full personal details, name, date of birth, full address
- The car registration number, if you are planning on buying a car get the reg number, that way you can get an official quote without guessing. This lets the insurance companies pull up full details of the car.
- If this isn't your first policy then you need details of your previous policy for start and end dates.
tips to save money
- Is your Mum or Dad a driver with a good history? try add them on the policy as a named driver this can reduce the premium, this is because the insurance company see it as any time they are driving the car it's less time you would be driving.
- Can you keep your car locked in a garage at night? it will make a difference, even a driveway off the road saves money compared to roadside
- Think about investing in an alarm and imobilizer. Any Thatcham insurance approved security reduces the policy
- How many miles do you plan to do in a year? The lower the miles the lower the policy. These tend to be in bands of say 0-3000, 3001-5000. Experiment with different mileages to meet what you think you will do. Don't be tempted to put 1000 miles if you do that in a month, when i took my campervan out at 3000 miles a year I had to email them a picture of the mileage an they have stated on teh policy they can come check this at any point.
- As daft as it sounds try both fully comprehensive and Third party fire and theft sometimes fully comp is cheaper, it was on my campervan (half in fact)
Once you have your quotes nicely arranged look at the providers and what they offer, some will give free legal protection, some free roadside assistance. I got £50 worth of free petrol with mine. Price it all as an overall package and go from there.
